Not familiar with the process? No worries! Here are the answers to the most frequently asked questions.
What is ski and snowboard maintenance for?
Maintenance ensures that the base of your skis or snowboard is in good condition and free of cracks. It guarantees that the structure allows for proper water drainage for optimal glide, that the edges are sharp for better grip, and that the waxing (or base treatment) is appropriate for the snow conditions. All of these elements together provide a smooth and safe experience for skiers and snowboarders.
What happens during maintenance?
It depends on the condition of your skis or snowboard when you bring them to the Repair Shop. In any case, every maintenance follows the same routine:
Inspection
When you drop off your equipment, the technician begins with a thorough inspection. They check the base for small cracks, holes, or scratches and examine the edges to determine if they need sharpening.
- Repair
Based on the inspection, the technician makes any necessary repairs and adjustments. Base imperfections are filled with molten polyethylene. Once the base is smooth, the technician structures it by creating micro-grooves, which help water drain and ensure optimal glide. - Edge Sharpening
Edges are sharpened on automated ceramic belts, providing a precision difficult to achieve at home. The outer edge is polished to optimize grip on the snow. These settings can be adjusted based on the skier or snowboarder’s skill level and preferences. - Waxing
The final step is applying wax to your skis or snowboard. At Bromont, you can choose between infrared waxing, which is faster, or traditional hot-iron waxing. A wide selection of waxes is available, chosen based on how often you wax and the snow conditions. - Binding Adjustment – Upon Request
Upon request, the technician can also adjust your bindings. They take into account your skill level, weight, height, age, and boots. This adjustment is essential for first-time ski use, when changing boots, or when the skier’s weight has changed significantly. It ensures precise control and reduces the risk of injury.
When should I have my equipment maintained?
A full maintenance is recommended at least once a year, ideally at the start or end of the season. Some manufacturers also suggest maintenance after about 8 outings, depending on snow conditions: more often on icy snow, less on soft or powdery snow. Depending on the situation, your equipment may need full maintenance or partial work, such as waxing only or edge touch-ups. Signs that it’s time to visit the Repair Shop include:
- Dried (whitened) wax
- Oxidized edges
- Loss of confidence on icy surfaces
- Difficulty holding a turn
- Feeling like the equipment is slowing you down or restricting movement
Our technicians will gladly evaluate your equipment and recommend the necessary maintenance to help you enjoy your runs to the fullest.
Do I need an appointment for maintenance?
No appointment is necessary. You can simply bring your skis or snowboard to the Mountain Workshop. The date for pickup will be arranged on-site, based on availability and your needs.
During busy periods, service is offered on a first-come, first-served basis, and wait times may be up to one week. Express services are also available for an additional fee.
How much does maintenance cost?
Prices range from $45 to $59 depending on the type of maintenance and the size of the equipment. Packages are also available! Check our pricing here.
